Privacy laws

Habitat is bound by the Australian Privacy Principles in the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth), and other laws which protect the privacy of individuals. We will sometimes handle personal information relying on exemptions under these laws. Any permitted handling under such exemptions will take precedence over this Privacy Policy.

Collection of personal information

Habitat will only collect and store personal information that is reasonably necessary for the functioning of the organisation or its activities. Habitat generally only collects personal information about an individual directly from the individual. Personal information will only be collected from a third party where it is unreasonable or impracticable to collect the information directly from the individual and otherwise with consent from the individual.

In certain circumstances, we may collect personal information about you, for example when you contact us, make a donation of accommodation for ‘Donate A Stay’, or join our mailing list. The type of information that we collect includes your name, contact details, address, as well as any other personal information provided in forms and documents you submit to us. We may also record details of our interactions with you, including any contact we have with you by email, online or on the telephone.

Habitat will only collect your sensitive information, as submitted by you or a third party acting on your behalf, where permitted by law.

Unless you notify us otherwise, we will assume that you have consented to the collection of all information which is provided to us for use in accordance with this Privacy Policy. You may withdraw your consent for Habitat to retain this information at any time.

The Company will retain your personal data only for as long as is necessary for the purposes set out in this Privacy Policy.

Use and disclosure of personal information

We collect, use and disclose personal information to conduct our business, including to provide, administer, improve and personalise our services and goods, identify individuals, maintain and update our records, assess submissions/applications for ‘Donate A Stay’, provide support and assistance to those in need, conduct surveys and research, protect our lawful interests, respond to your queries or concerns and otherwise, as permitted or required by law.

If you are a mailing list registrant we may use your personal information to provide you with ongoing promotional materials and marketing communications about our events, products, services, initiatives by email, online or by other means (unless you opt out or we are subject to legal restrictions). We do not, however, sell, rent or trade personal information to third parties for marketing purposes.

Please note, we may not be able to provide you with ongoing communications without your personal information. For example, we may not be able to communicate with you or respond to your enquiries.

We may exchange your personal information with other service providers, including agencies who assist us with archival, auditing, accounting, legal, business, delivery, data processing, storage and analysis, research, website or technology services.
